40G BiDi vs 40G SR4 Optical Transceivers: Fiber, Connector and Distance

By C-LIGHT Marketing 丨 Oct 24, 2025
Table of Contents

40G BiDi and 40G SR4 QSFP+ transceivers both provide 40Gbps optical connectivity, but they use different transmission architectures. The key distinction is how optical signals travel through the fiber infrastructure. BiDi technology uses different wavelengths for bidirectional communication over a shared fiber path, while SR4 uses four parallel transmit lanes and four parallel receive lanes over multimode fiber.

These differences affect fiber count, connector selection, optical reach, cabling design and migration cost. A 40G BiDi solution can reduce fiber usage or support longer single-mode links, depending on its optical implementation. A 40G SR4 module is designed for short-reach multimode connections, particularly within data centers and equipment rooms.

    Quick technical distinction:
    • 40G BiDi: Bidirectional wavelength-based transmission, commonly using an LC interface. C-LIGHT's listed 40G BiDi models use SMF and LAN-WDM for 40km and 80km links.

    • 40G SR4: Four parallel 10G optical lanes in each direction, using 850nm VCSEL technology, multimode fiber and an MPO connector.

    1. 40G BiDi Optical Transceiver Architecture

A 40G BiDi optical transceiver uses bidirectional optical transmission to carry data in both directions over a shared fiber path. Different optical wavelengths distinguish the transmit and receive signals, allowing the two directions to operate simultaneously without requiring separate transmit and receive fiber groups.

For a single-fiber BiDi link, the two endpoints must use complementary wavelength configurations. One module transmits on the wavelength expected by the remote receiver, while the opposite module uses the complementary transmit and receive arrangement. Matching the correct A/B module pair is therefore essential.

The term 40G BiDi can describe different optical implementations. Some short-reach 40GBASE-SR-BiDi products use multimode fiber and wavelengths around the 850nm and 900nm regions. Other 40G BiDi products use single-mode fiber and LAN-WDM technology for much longer transmission distances.

    2. 40G SR4 Optical Transceiver Architecture

40GBASE-SR4 uses parallel optical transmission over multimode fiber. The module divides the 40Gbps aggregate data stream into four transmit lanes, each operating at approximately 10.3125Gbps. Four additional optical lanes carry incoming data in the opposite direction.

SR4 uses 850nm VCSEL transmitter technology and parallel optical receiver channels. Its MPO-12 interface provides the fiber connections required for the four transmit and four receive lanes, with additional positions in the connector remaining unused in the standard eight-active-fiber arrangement.

Unlike a BiDi link, SR4 does not combine both directions onto a shared fiber path through wavelength separation. It uses dedicated fibers for transmit and receive signals.

    Typical 40GBASE-SR4 applications include:

    • Server-to-switch connections in data centers

    • Switch-to-switch links within equipment rows

    • High-density multimode fiber distribution systems

    • Short-reach enterprise network connections

The following comparison focuses on C-LIGHT's listed long-reach, single-mode 40G BiDi products and its 40GBASE-SR4 multimode product. Other manufacturers also offer short-reach multimode 40G BiDi modules, so the exact optical specification must always be checked.

    4. Fiber Utilization and Cabling Requirements

Fiber infrastructure is one of the most important factors when choosing between BiDi and SR4. Their connector types and optical architectures require different cabling arrangements.

BiDi fiber utilization: A single-fiber bidirectional implementation uses wavelength separation to transmit and receive signals over the same fiber strand. This can reduce fiber consumption and make use of existing single-mode fiber infrastructure where a compatible link is available.

SR4 fiber utilization: SR4 uses four transmit fibers and four receive fibers. The MPO-12 connector supports this parallel optical arrangement, making it suitable for structured multimode cabling and high-density data center patching.

Patch-panel requirementsDuplex or simplex LC arrangement according to the module designMPO polarity and lane mapping must be correct

For SR4 deployments, MPO polarity and fiber mapping are particularly important. The transmit lanes at one end must connect to the corresponding receive lanes at the opposite end. Incorrect polarity or lane mapping can prevent the link from establishing even when the connector is physically compatible.

    5. Transmission Distance and Application Scenarios

40G BiDi and 40G SR4 are not simply two alternatives for the same distance range. Their optical implementations target different network environments.

For short-reach data center links, SR4 provides a direct parallel multimode solution. OM3 and OM4 fiber support different maximum distances, and the selected cable grade must match the module's specification.

For longer links over single-mode fiber, C-LIGHT's 40G BiDi LAN-WDM products offer 40km and 80km configurations. These modules are more relevant to campus, enterprise inter-building and telecommunications links than to conventional short-reach SR4 deployments.

    6. Can 40G BiDi and 40G SR4 Connect Directly?

40G BiDi and 40G SR4 transceivers cannot establish a direct optical link with each other simply because both support 40Gbps QSFP+ interfaces. Their optical characteristics and fiber interfaces are different.

For example, C-LIGHT's listed 40G BiDi products use single-mode fiber and LAN-WDM optics, while CLQSFP40GSR4 uses 850nm VCSEL technology over multimode fiber. Their wavelengths, fiber media and optical transmission architectures do not match.

Even where two modules use LC connectors, connector shape alone does not establish optical compatibility. The wavelength, fiber type, transmit and receive specifications, and signaling implementation must all be compatible.

A media conversion or network equipment solution may be used to interconnect different optical interfaces, but it requires an appropriate intermediate device or architecture. A passive connector adapter cannot convert the optical characteristics of an SR4 module into those of a BiDi module.

    7. Can Existing 10G Fiber Infrastructure Be Reused?

BiDi technology can be attractive when upgrading a network with limited fiber availability. A compatible single-fiber bidirectional design may use an existing fiber path without requiring separate transmit and receive strands.

However, existing fiber reuse depends on more than the number of available strands. Engineers should confirm:

    • Whether the existing fiber is single-mode or multimode

    • Whether the selected BiDi module supports the installed fiber type

    • Whether both endpoints use complementary wavelength configurations

    • Whether the fiber path meets attenuation and dispersion requirements

    • Whether the host equipment supports the selected 40G QSFP+ module

SR4 is more suitable where an MPO-based multimode cabling system is already installed or planned. It can provide a straightforward short-reach connection without requiring a single-mode BiDi architecture.

    8. Optical Budget and Link Engineering

Transmission distance should never be selected from a product label alone. The optical link must satisfy the transmitter output, receiver sensitivity, channel loss and other limits specified by the module datasheet.

For a practical link assessment, engineers should evaluate:

    • Transmitter output power: Verify that the module's launch power is within the required range.

    • Receiver sensitivity: Confirm that the received signal remains above the minimum sensitivity threshold.

    • Fiber attenuation: Calculate the loss across the installed fiber length and wavelength range.

    • Connector and splice loss: Include patch panels, adapters, splices and other passive components.

    • Optical margin: Allow sufficient engineering margin for aging, repairs and installation variation.

    • Dispersion: For longer single-mode links, evaluate chromatic dispersion and any applicable transmitter or receiver limits.

For SR4, lane-level optical specifications and the integrity of the parallel fiber channels are important. For long-reach BiDi links, the wavelength-specific optical budget and the correct endpoint pairing are central to link performance.

    10. Conclusion

40G BiDi and 40G SR4 are two distinct optical solutions for 40Gbps networking. BiDi uses wavelength-based bidirectional transmission and can reduce fiber requirements. C-LIGHT's listed 40G BiDi products use single-mode LAN-WDM optics for 40km and 80km applications. SR4 uses four parallel transmit and four receive lanes over 850nm multimode fiber, with an MPO-12 interface for short-reach connections.

The right choice depends on link distance, existing fiber infrastructure, connector requirements, optical budget and host compatibility. SR4 is a practical option for short-reach multimode data center links, while the listed C-LIGHT BiDi configurations address longer single-mode connections where fiber utilization and reach are important.
