10G Copper RJ45 SFP+ 80m transceiver
Posted on 2025-12-23

10G Copper SFP+ 80m module is a high-speed alternative to optical transceivers, utilizing twisted-pair copper cable as the transmission medium. It complis with SFF-8431 and IEEE 802.3ap/an standards, achieving 10Gbps data transmission through a standard RJ45 interface using Category 6a/7 or higher-grade shielded twisted-pair cables. Compared to traditional 10GBASE-T technology, this direct-attach copper (DAC) solution offers lower power consumption, reduced latency, and superior cost-effectiveness, making it particularly suitable for short-distance interconnections within 80 meters.

10G Copper RJ45 SFP+ 80m transceiver key performance features

●Optimized Transmission Distance

The 80-meter transmission distance precisely covers the connection requirements within most data center cabinets and between adjacent cabinets. Compared to the 15-meter or 30-meter limitations of earlier 10GBASE-CR standards, the 80-meter version provides greater deployment flexibility, enabling cross-rack connections without requiring additional repeater devices.

Low Power Consumption & Low Latency

Utilizing a passive or active copper cable design, its typical power consumption is only 0.5-1.5W, significantly lower than the 4-6W of 10GBASE-T modules. This energy-efficient characteristic is crucial for large-scale deployments. Furthermore, direct electrical signal transmission results in sub-microsecond latency, superior to 10GBASE-T solutions that require complex encoding and decoding.

Excellent Signal Integrity

Leveraging advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and equalization algorithms, the module effectively compensates for signal attenuation and interference in copper cables at high frequencies. Pre-emphasis and receiver equalization techniques ensure a clear signal eye diagram is maintained over 80 meters of Cat 6a/7 cable, meeting the Bit Error Rate (BER) requirements for 10Gbps high-speed transmission.

Plug-and-Play & Broad Compatibility

The module typically operates without configuration and supports hot-swapping. Products from mainstream vendors offer good switch compatibility and can work seamlessly with SFP+ ports from brands such as Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and HPE.

10G Copper SFP+ 80m module technical implementation principle

The core of the 10G Copper SFP+ 80m module lies in full-duplex data transmission over the four pairs of wires within the twisted-pair cable. Each wire pair carries an effective data rate of 2.5Gbps, achieved through efficient modulation techniques like PAM16 (16-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation). The built-in DSP chip performs critical functions:

●Adaptive Equalization: Dynamically compensates for signal loss caused by cables of varying lengths and qualities.

Crosstalk Cancellation: Reduces electromagnetic interference between wire pairs, including Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT) and Far-End Crosstalk (FEXT).

Clock Recovery: Precisely extracts the clock signal from the data stream to ensure synchronization accuracy.

10G Copper RJ45 SFP+ 80m transceiver deployment considerations

●Cable Quality Requirements: Must use Category 6a or Category 7 and above shielded twisted-pair cables, ensuring high-quality termination of connectors (RJ45).

●Thermal Management: Although power consumption is low, adequate airflow should be ensured in high-density deployments.

●Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Avoid running cables parallel to power cables over long distances to reduce interference risks.

●Distance Verification: It is recommended to test the actual usable length of specific cables at 10G speeds before final deployment.
